Michela Cosimi: Unapologetically Primitive

Michela Cosimi, an Italian-born artist, draws inspiration from her personal experiences and observations, crafting art that delves into reality and accentuates the truth of human emotions. Her work, deeply rooted in her heritage, is a testament to the raw and unfiltered expression of life’s imperfections.

Cosimi’s art is figurative, focusing on human sensitivity, feelings, and emotions. She believes in feeling before knowing and wanting, and this belief is reflected in her work. She is not interested in abstraction, as she finds it to be an escape from reality. Instead, she wants to delve into reality, accentuating the truth of things.

To achieve this, Cosimi uses intense colors and distorts reality in her paintings. She draws inspiration from the art of primitives, children, and so-called “madmen.” These artists, she believes, have a unique way of expressing themselves that is free from the constraints of reason and logic.

One of Cosimi’s most notable works is her self-portrait from 2019. In this digital self-portrait, she expresses her emotions freely, without any academic constraints. Using an iPad, she molds her inner chaos with a primal intensity, reflecting life’s imperfect beauty.

This self-portrait has been exhibited in different countries and has become a symbol of Cosimi’s free, fragile, and imperfect personality. She aims to create art that is vivid, raw, and unapologetic.

Cosimi’s work is a reminder that art is not always about perfection. It is about expressing oneself authentically and embracing imperfection. Her art is a reflection of her inner world, emotions, thoughts, childhood, becoming, birth, life, and death.
