Emmanuelle Becker is a visual artist-photographer living in Paris. She studied photography and printmaking at George Washington University in Washington, DC., graduating with honors, and pursued a Master’s degree in painting at Pratt Institute in NYC. She has exhibited her work in Europe, Western Asia, and the United States. Her work has featured in several international photography publications and she is the recipient of different awards and distinctions.

Her upcoming exhibition, “The Enigma of Self: Identity in Emmanuelle Becker’s Work,” features two photographic portfolios: “Unmasked” and “Mirror of an Instant.”

The exploration of identity in contemporary art, led by influential artists like Michel Journiac, Cindy Sherman, and Morimura Yasumasa, spans over a decade. Emmanuelle Becker’s photography delves into this complex subject and focuses on the intricacies of interiority.

Identity, a multifaceted concept, encompasses permanence, collective connections, and uniqueness. In “Unmasked”, Becker explores the idea of identity as appearance, false roles, and artificial constructions. The masks symbolize the generalization of identity, simultaneously magnifying and obscuring individuals. Becker’s creations challenge the notion of collective connections. She reveals a deeper truth behind her masks, exposing the mysteries of our wavering identity.

In the series, “Mirror of an Instant,” the artist exposes the fragility and ephemerality of identity. Inspired by Paul Eluard’s poem of the same name, this work explores the transient nature of perception. The images call on viewers to question their understanding of identity, considering their biases and preconceptions, and raise questions about belonging in a world where identity may be perceived as elusive.

With both of her series, Becker invites viewers to see the world through her unique perspective and reflect on how we construct our understanding of the world and ourselves.

“The Enigma Within”, curated by Caroline Wiart and Patrice Galiana.
