Lisa Abelsson, an artist from Stockholm, Sweden, has carved her own unique niche in the art world. While she may not have followed a traditional artistic path, her journey from a fashion model in Europe to a trained nurse in Sweden has enriched her artistic expression in unexpected ways.

Operating in the serene south of Sweden, specifically in the enchanting region known as Österlen, Abelsson is more or less a self-taught artist. Her background as a fashion model infuses a sense of elegance and style into her work, while her training as a nurse adds a layer of understanding of the human form and anatomy.

Abelsson draws inspiration from a diverse array of sources, ranging from fates to fashion and dance. Her creations, particularly the stunning baroque dresses, are a testament to her love for the lavish and the ornate. The classic torso frequently takes center stage in her works, a nod to her fascination with the human body and its various expressions.

One distinctive aspect of Abelsson’s sculptures lies in her adept combination of materials. The juxtaposition of rigid iron mesh with the softness of aluminum, copper, or brass infuses her sculptures with a sense of life and movement. When illuminated, these sculptures cast beautiful shadows, creating an immersive experience for the viewer.

A notable chapter in Abelsson’s artistic journey involves her role as the curator of a sculpture park at Kronovall Castle. This initiative, which she also spearheaded, lasted for five years and allowed her to showcase her sculptures in a historic and enchanting setting. Inspired by the stories of the ladies who once inhabited the castle, Abelsson crafted her first baroque dress on this grounds—woven from aluminum and adorned with hundreds of pearls.

Last summer, Abelsson brought her artistry to Christinehov Castle, where she exhibited dresses inspired by the 18th century. This dedication to historical themes is a recurring motif in her work, demonstrating a commitment to bridging the past with the present. Her collaboration with several gallerists in Sweden ensures that her work finds a place on the walls and pedestals of prominent art spaces.

Two standout exhibitions at Norrvikens Gardens in Båstad underscore Abelsson’s artistic impact. In 2019, she presented “Totally Baroque,” featuring grand dresses displayed outdoors in the gardens. The following year, “Baletto” showcased life-size ballerinas, captivating the imaginations of 170,000 visitors throughout the season. The dance theme, a constant thread in Abelsson’s work, resonates with her profound interest in the powerful and emotive art of flamenco dancers.

The dresses that Abelsson meticulously crafts are predominantly composed of soft aluminum, skillfully manipulated to resemble fabric. The illusion is further enhanced with delicate embellishments such as pearls or recycled old jewelry, adding a layer of history and narrative to each creation.

In a world where the boundaries between art forms are increasingly blurred, Lisa Abelsson stands as a testament to the power of interdisciplinary expression. Her journey from fashion model to nurse to self-taught sculptor is reflected in the richness and diversity of her art. Through her sculptures, she invites us to explore the intersections of fashion, dance, and sculpture, creating a visual symphony that resonates with both sophistication and simplicity.
